Commemorating Freedom: Liberty Tree Dedication at the Michigan State Capitol

On a crisp spring day, April 26, 2024, the Michigan State Capitol Complex served as the backdrop for a deeply meaningful ceremony as members of the SAR Pvt. Ephraim Wheaton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and its co-sponsors gathered to dedicate a Liberty Tree and accompanying plaque. This event, enriched by the participation of the SAR Central Michigan Chapter, Michigan Society of Sons of the American Revolution (MISSAR), NSSAR Washington Endowment Fund, National Society of Sons of the American Revolution, American Legion-Michigan State Council, and Vietnam Veterans of America-Michigan State Council, marked an early celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

The dedication ceremony was not only a tribute to the historical Liberty Tree—a symbol of freedom and resistance during the American Revolution—but also an acknowledgment of the enduring values that have shaped our nation. The original Liberty Tree in Boston was a rallying point for the Patriots, and by planting a new Liberty Tree, we reconnect with our revolutionary roots and the ideals that propelled the founding of our nation.

Parker Hagle, the newly installed State President of the Children of the American Revolution, delivered a poignant speech that bridged the gap between our revolutionary past and the modern-day challenges of environmental conservation. Parker reminded us of the importance of our heritage and how it continues to inspire actions toward preserving freedom and nurturing the environment.

The ceremony was further dignified by an official letter from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who congratulated MISSAR on its dedication efforts and recognized the Patriots who bravely fought for our independence. Her words underscored the significance of the event and celebrated the continued relevance of the ideals fought for during the American Revolutionary War.

Bob Craig from the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution reflected on the importance of the Liberty Tree, noting, “It’s important to have a Liberty tree to dedicate what our patriots back in 1765 in the early colonial era and people who fought in the Revolutionary War fought for liberty.” His statement echoed throughout the ceremony, reminding us of the sacrifices made for freedom and the responsibilities we carry forward.

As we near the 250th anniversary of America’s birth, this Liberty Tree will stand as a beacon of freedom and a living reminder of our revolutionary heritage. It invites current and future generations to reflect on our history and to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

We thank everyone who participated in and supported this poignant event. The dedication of the Liberty Tree is a significant addition to our ongoing celebration of America’s rich history, and it reinforces our commitment to the values our nation was built upon: liberty, justice, and unity.

Let this Liberty Tree grow and thrive as a symbol of our unyielding spirit and enduring dedication to the principles that define us as a nation. Join us at the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution as we continue to honor our past, celebrate our present, and forge our future.
