The Northern Michigan Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution celebrates its 30th anniversary since founding in 1989 by Col Ervan Amidon, the Chapter's First President, and the chapter has one its founding members still active. Based in the Traverse City area, its membership numbers about 90 Compatriots who are from the northern Lower Michigan as well as the Upper Peninsula. Members represent communities from Tawas to Manistee, from Houghton Lake to Mackinaw City, from Iron Mountain to Drummond Island, and as far away as New Mexico, California, Florida, Indiana, Texas, Washington D.C., Colorado, and Wyoming. No matter where you live, the Northern Michigan Chapter invites you to explore your heritage and become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
The Northern Michigan Chapter supports the mission of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution and the Michigan State Society Sons of the American Revolution, which support historic preservation, patriotism, and education.
Traverse City is located at the base of East and West Grand Traverse Bay in the northwest part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The Reverend Peter Doughtery started the first permanent settlement in 1839 on the Old Mission peninsula shortly after Michigan became the 26th state of the Union in 1837. Incorporated in 1891, Traverse City has since accumulated a number of nicknames, including: Traverse, "T.C.", The Cherry Capital (of the World), Cherryland, The Coast Guard City, The Queen City (of the North).
The surrounding countryside also produces grapes, and is one of the centers of wine production in the Midwest. Tourism, both summer and winter, is another key industry.
The area features varied natural attractions, including freshwater lakes and bays, beaches, vineyards, The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, downhill skiing areas, and numerous forests. Traverse City is the county seat of Grand Traverse County, although a small portion of the municipality extends into Leelanau County. It is the largest city in the 21-county Northern Michigan region, with a population of 14,674 (2010 census), with 143,372 in the surrounding areas. Traverse City is also the home of Northwestern Community College.
