Planting Seeds of Liberty and Environmental Stewardship

On April 26, 2023, the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, alongside the Michigan Society of the Children of the American Revolution, held a profound Liberty Tree Dedication ceremony at Lansing. This event not only commemorated our nation’s history but also underscored our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Parker Hagle, the newly installed State President of the Children of the American Revolution, delivered a moving speech that connected our revolutionary past with our present-day challenges and opportunities in environmental conservation. Parker highlighted the historical significance of the original Liberty Tree, which stood as a beacon of freedom and rebellion against oppression. The symbolic lanterns once hung from its boughs celebrated the repeal of the Stamp Act, marking the tree as a rallying point during the American Revolution.

Today, as we face environmental challenges of a different nature, the role of trees remains critically important. Parker eloquently spoke about the multifaceted benefits of trees, from producing essential oxygen and serving as vital carbon sinks to preventing soil erosion and enhancing recreational spaces for our communities. Her message was clear: just as our forebears gathered around the Liberty Tree to forge a new nation, we must now rally around our trees and forests to safeguard our planet.

In a gesture that bridged historical reverence with ecological action, the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution distributed 100 Eastern White Pine seedlings—the official state tree of Michigan. These seedlings symbolize our hope and commitment to a greener, more sustainable future. Parker, along with her grandfather, Tim LeMarbe, were among those who took the initiative, each taking a seedling to plant locally, further spreading the legacy of Liberty Trees across Michigan.

This Liberty Tree planted in Lansing serves as a living monument, inviting the community to gather and share visions for a sustainable future. It stands as a testament to our ongoing dedication to both our historical roots and our environmental responsibilities.

As we reflect on the significance of Arbor Day and similar celebrations, let us remember the vital role of trees in both our history and our environmental future. They are not only silent witnesses to our past but active participants in our effort to ensure a healthy planet for generations to come.

We extend our gratitude to Parker Hagle for her inspiring words and to all members of our community who continue to support these vital initiatives. Let us continue to nurture these young pines, just as we cherish the freedoms they symbolize. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of the Liberty Tree grows stronger with each passing year.
