The Michigan Society Sons of the American Revolution (MISSAR) hosted state youth contest award winners and their families during their annual meeting in Lansing and are thrilled to announce the categories each contest represented and the winners. These winners will be entered into the national competition hosted by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) with winners announced during the organizations summer conference.
Michigan high school students had the opportunity to show their literary skill as well as their historical and patriotic knowledge by entering the SAR Joseph S. Rumbaugh Essay Contest. The contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools who are in grades 9 through 12. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed it on the Advisory List of the National Contests and Activities. This year’s state winner is Aditya Ambarisha from Novi High School, and he was sponsored by the Oaks Chapter.
Michigan middle school students (including 9th grade) were invited to participate in the SAR Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest. Any middle school student from a public, private, or accredited home school is eligible. This year’s state winner is Payton Goodson, Shawmut Hills Academy from Grand Rapids Public Schools and she was sponsored by the West Michigan Chapter.
Michigan elementary school students are invited each year to participate in the SAR Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate interest in American history in support of the Elementary School curriculum, which is generally when the subject of the American Revolution is taught. This contest is endorsed by the National Art Education Association (NAEA). This year’s state winner is Brittyn Hoeksema from Byron Center Christian School, and she was sponsored by the West Michigan Chapter
Additional Award winners recognized during the MISSAR State Conference included Eagle Scout Reece Bednas from Bloomfield Hills High School sponsored by the Detroit Metro Chapter, and Outstanding JROTC/ROTC Enhanced Cadet Lewis Nagel from Calumet High School sponsored by the Straits Chapter.
