Today, the Michigan Society, Sons of the American Revolution (MISSAR) honors all United States veterans—past and present—whose service has safeguarded the freedoms first won by our Patriot ancestors.
Veterans Day traces its origins to the armistice that ended the fighting in World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. More than a century later, the call to remember remains the same: pause, reflect, and offer thanks to those who stood watch for our country—at home and around the world.
Michigan’s gratitude
From the shores of the Great Lakes to communities large and small, Michiganders have answered the nation’s call in every era. Today, we salute the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen from Michigan who served—and the families who served alongside them.
How you can honor veterans today
- Say “thank you.” A sincere word—especially to a veteran you know—matters.
- Attend a ceremony. Many Michigan communities host Veterans Day observances at 11:00 a.m.
- Support veterans’ organizations. Consider donating time or resources to reputable groups serving veterans’ needs.
- Share their stories. Record and preserve family service histories so future generations remember.
Our commitment as MISSAR
As descendants of the Patriots of the American Revolution, we strive to keep faith with the principles they fought for and with the veterans who defend them today. MISSAR chapters mark veterans’ graves, support ROTC/JROTC recognition, present flag certificates, and appear with Color Guard units at civic events to promote remembrance and patriotic education.
