DMC Hosts Genealogy Workshop at Mt. Clemens Public Library

On Saturday, April 29, the DMC, in cooperation with the Macomb County Genealogy Group (MCGG), conducted a Genealogy Workshop at the Mt. Clemens Public Library entitled Pathway to Membership in a Lineage Society. About 40 guests attended the event, which consisted of general information about lineage societies (such as the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution) that honor Americans who fought in or otherwise supported America’s fight for freedom. Most lineage societies require proof of a direct relationship from one generation to the next, all the way back to the ancestor who was involved in the event, or from a certain group of people, such as British Royalty or the Mayflower passengers. Presentations from featured speakers included the types of documents that are acceptable forms of proof, and where they might be obtained.

The attendees were introduced to the extensive genealogical collections and databases available in the Mt. Clemens Public Library Genealogy Room, and the assistance that volunteers from the Macomb County Genealogy Group can provide either in person, via mailed request, by attending meetings, by signing up for the MCGG’s mailing list, or by visiting their webpage.

Following the formal presentations, attendees were invited to talk to one of the 14 volunteers from the SAR, the MCGG, and the Alexander Macomb Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution that were available to assist them with their questions, applications and research “brick walls”. Although most of the attendees did not reach the finish line on Saturday, many said they learned a lot to help them progress and look forward to continuing their journey. One person commented, “Now I feel overwhelmed, but excited to get started.” Another gentleman who met with SAR representatives said, “Before this workshop, I was very discouraged. Now I am really optimistic that this is doable.”
